My biggest fear when we became parents was that our relationship as a couple would change…. I’d seen way too much in my job as a Marriage + Family Therapist, and to be honest, I was scared. TJ and I had always enjoyed our time together… traveling, just hanging out… really, we just valued each other’s company and companionship. I used to get messages from people saying “Enjoy it while you can, because it all changes when you have children.” Nothing like a little encouragement for new parents, right??
And while those comments felt a little disheartening, if anything, they lit a fire under us and we realized that in order to maintain the quality of our marriage (both when Harper arrived and then when Camille arrived) was to be intentional with our time. To schedule in time together…. just like we would a doctor’s appointment or a hair appointment. Our scheduled time for each other is every Friday evening (when the girls go down) + a family workout on Saturday morning. On Friday evenings we like to pick out a bottle of wine, order takeout (our latest obsession has been poké), turn on some music (electronics away, television off) and reconnect after the long week. On Saturday mornings we like to put the girls in the jogging stroller and head out for a family run (which is the main reason we invested in this double stroller). And while neither of them involve getting super dressed up + heading out for a fancy date night (the beauty lies within the simplicity), they’re the two things I always look most forward to in my week. Annnnd, since it’s Friday, you can bet that we’ll be parked outside on our patio, around the fire-pit, sipping some vino, with John Mayer playing in the background…
Another exciting thing about today (Friday!) is that the Nordstrom Anniversary sale is now open for everyone (and there are still so many great items available) and goes until August 4th. Given that, I had TJ round up a few of his favorites. I love all of his selects because they can easily be worn now, and later, and mixed into pieces he already owns in his wardrobe. He was on the hunt for a new workout shoe, and this Adidas pair was both stylish + great for cross training purposes… he’s had these joggers for several seasons and they’re also great for lounging purposes. TJ’s always a fan of a good basic top… the this long sleeve thermal + henley tee are both great pieces that can be dressed up, or down, depending on the occasion (he pairs them with his all time favorite jeans… and there’s a huge selection of the PAIGE Federal Slim Fit jeans at the sale….). This sports coat is his new go-to option when he has a business casual meeting. And, since we’re big into lounging around over here, these lounge shorts are seriously the best. I think the moment he got them, the tag came off and he’s worn them every evening since.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!
