My 16 Wardrobe Essentials For Spring

We had daylight savings time this past weekend (for those living in states that don’t have this, we essentially lose an hour of sleep in the morning and gain an hour in the evening for a day… but the sunrise later and sets later… so it’s light longer) and it’s been throwing us off so much lately… losing track of time in the evenings, thinking it’s earlier than it really is… and sluggish in the mornings because it’s so dark when we wake up… I’m certain it’s nothing that a few days of adjusting won’t fix, but man, I underestimated it’s impact this year….

All that to say, daylight savings usually marks the start of spring for us… and with spring officially arriving this Saturday, I’m excited for this spring season. And in honor of it, I decided to round up my wardrobe staples for this spring season. These are all items I’ve shared before, some from last season, which is how I know they will make great staples for any wardrobe…. they’re easy to mix and match, transition from casual to slightly less casual (haha), and should keep you feeling comfortable and pulled together….

In the fall I tend to move my wardrobe towards darker shades… blacks, greys, chocolates, and deep mauve colors… but in the spring I love lightening things up with white, ivory, cream, and camel shades… as you can see in the following photos. I have each piece styled below and I’m including a quick summary as to why they make a great staple. Hope it helps!

(Trench Coat | Raglan Tee | Sweat Shorts | White Dress | Linen Shorts | Ribbed Long Sleeve Tee | Ribbed Tank | Open Knit Sweater | Cashmere Tee | White Half Zip (also here)| High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans | Cut-Offs | White Jeans | J. Crew Coatigan | Tan Leggings | Ribbed Joggers + Hoodie)

OPEN KNIT SWEATER + LINEN SHORTS

I bought this mesh sweater last spring and it’s a great transitional piece… for those days when temps are warmer, but not warm enough for a short sleeve tee… or an easy piece to throw on over a cute swimsuit. I sized up for a looser fit, as it does run true to size and is more fitted….

And these linen shorts were a summer 2019 purchase… but I wore them non-stop last season, and no doubt will continue to as temps warm up. They are easy to throw on over a swimsuit… or layer with a sweater… or just a long sleeve tee and a denim jacket. I bought my regular size, but if you’re between sizes, sizing up might be best as some people noted the waist band was fitted on them….

J.CREW COATIGAN + CUT-OFFS

It’s no secret I love the J.Crew coatigan… it’s a great staple for any season, really… but especially in the spring months. It’s versatile, structured, and will keep you warm on a mild spring day. Wear it with jeans, cut-offs, or joggers and it’ll pull the outfit together.

And these cut-offs are another go-to pair season after season (I first bought them in 2017… they last!). They have a great distressed look to them and are great for spring with a sweatshirt or sweater…. I did just purchase this pair. I don’t know how they fit yet, but they have a longer inseam, so if you like that they might be worth a look, as well as the Reese pair (which I own and really like as well).

IVORY RIBBED LOUNGE SET + TRENCH COAT

I love a trench coat as a good, structured, transitional piece between summer and fall, and then winter to spring. I purchased this one last year and it’s held up so well… and goes with so many different items. It also easily pulls together a casual outfit effortlessly….

And my love for these joggers + pullover runs deep… I think I’ve included the joggers in every capsule since August…. everything from the color to the ribbed material makes them perfect for transitioning into Spring…. If you’re looking for an alternative to this pair, Lou + Grey just released an oat color in their signature soft collection and it’s beautiful (and not to mention super soft….).

CASHMERE TEE + HIGH WAISTED STRAIGHT LEG JEANS

This cashmere tee is different than the one I am wearing, but looks almost identical (since the one I have is sold out). But I love a good cashmere tee for spring because it keeps you warm, and looks chic… and, in the camel shade, it’s super versatile.

As always, I recommend these AGOLDE jamie jeans… a purchase from 2019, I wear them all the time (well, they’ve been on a bit of a hiatus in 2020 but they’re ready for action!)…. I do cut the hem though since the length is too long for my short legs. A great staple for all season….

WHITE RIBBED SEAMLESS TOP + WHITE DENIM

I bought this ribbed seamless top about a month ago and have worn it several times a week since. It’s a fitted top, but super comfortable… and goes with joggers, jeans, and shorts… and is cute layered under a slip dress or jumpsuit. If you want it looser I’d go up a size….

And I love white denim year round, but particularly in spring and summer…. I love how it lightens up and makes outfits look fresh. The white denim pairs I wear and would recommend include this skinny pair and straight leg pair (featured above). They’re both a thicker material, but still comfortable, and not see through.

WHITE HALF ZIP + WHITE LOUNGE SHORTS

This white half zip is another piece I’ve been wearing non stop for the past several months and it’s a great wardrobe staple to take me through spring… I can wear it with cut-offs, jeans, and for lounging… it’s low in stock, so here is another white half zip option (great price as well) and another one here.

And since I love joggers so much, I always recommend lounge shorts for warmer months… and easy way to feel comfortable in shorts. I bought these white ones (here is another pair by the same brand, more sizes, without drawstring) at the end of summer and they look great with sweaters, tees, jackets, and sweatshirts… and depending on how I style them they can be sporty or perfect for the beach.

RAGLAN TEE

I shared this raglan tee in my go-to basic tee round-up… it’s a great basic year around, but especially in the spring and summer months. I wear it with jeans, joggers, and leggings… and works for lounging. I went with my regular size and it has a loose, but not oversized fit.

RIBBED TANK

I’ve had this ribbed tank in black and white since last season, and I love this color for spring. This tank has a great ribbed texture and goes with so many different pieces. Dress it up with white jeans and suede jacket… or make it casual with joggers…. this tank was recommended as a less expensive option!

WHITE DRESS

A white dress is a staple for me whenever spring and summer roll around. I invested in this tiered linen dress in the middle of the summer and wore it non-stop as a cover-up. I love that a white dress can work for so many different occasions… baby shower, date nights, daytime casual, etc. A few other white dresses that I love include this white eyelet dress, white tank dress (I own it in black and blush), ruffle sleeve cotton dress, and this white slip dress.

TAN HIGH WAISTED LEGGINGS

I always recommend leggings in the cooler months, and then switch to biker shorts in the summer season… but I love tan leggings for the spring to freshen things up a bit (I know I’ve said that several times already…). I’ve had these since September and they’re great…. these are also a great alternative if you’re looking for a lighter shade legging.
