Home || Our Patio Makeover

Over the past several weeks we’ve been doing a few home improvement projects around the house that have really made a huge difference. When we completed the first part of our renovations last October, we decided we needed to take a break from home projects. Despite the excitement that goes into the process, we had a bad experience with our contractor (more here) and decided that we were very happy with where the house was and it was time to just enjoy it.

When we went into the stay at home orders back in March, we started spending a lot of time outside in our backyard area. During one of our Friday evening wine nights outside, we put together a loose plan as to what we would do to the backyard….

During the first phase of our remodel, we addressed some of the backyard issues. We:

– Tilled the ground and planted seed
– Cut back all the overgrowth. There were fallen trees in the center of the yard and about 8 ft of overgrowth on the side of the yard
– Gave the existing pergola a facelift by fixing the termite damage + painting it

This was our plan for this most recent round of backyard touch-ups:

– Lay porcelain pavers + cement tile over the existing concrete structure (cheaper than demolishing it, and we liked the existing space)
– Landscape + add flowers to several areas in the yard
– Build a new fence on the side of the house to address broken slats
– Build a new water heather shed (see the structure to the left in the first before photo)

Those changes are what you see here! We are so happy with the transformation of our patio space… it feels light, airy, and makes us feel as if we’re sitting somewhere on the Mediterranean Coast (despite being miles and miles away). Our ultimate goal for the backyard space would be to extend out the concrete area (and still maintain the same tile pattern) and create an outdoor kitchen space + built in fireplace…. as well as a pool area….

It all takes time, and the process is slow, but that’s part of the fixer upper journey.
