A Mother’s Promise

mothers promise, itsy bitsy indulgences

I think all mothers have hopes and dreams for their children. Yet, I never realized the magnitude of these hopes and dreams until I became pregnant. Even while little Harper was cooking away inside, I started to imagine what she would be like. What would be the things that made her laugh. What would she be passionate about? What would be her “hot buttons” and how would she navigate her way through life? My hopes were that she would be a passionate little one, with a mighty zest for life, and an insatiable curiosity. While these were my hopes and desires for her, I also realized my role, as well as TJ’s role, in this process. While we can never make her be someone she is not, we can help to foster certain traits: passion, zest, and curiosity.

When Harper arrived, my hopes and dreams for her were only magnified times ten… and my responsibility to her as a mother became very real and apparent. I got to thinking about the ways in which I wanted to cultivate and foster passion, drive, curiosity, and zest within her. Over the past few weeks, my #motherspromise to her has been tweaked and streamlined, with the final outcome being this:

“I promise to always provide Harper with small adventures to cultivate her sense of curiosity and lust for life. I promise to help her celebrate life and to find the abundant joy in small things.”

Yet, making a promise isn’t enough… there must be follow through (because, that’s pretty much what makes a promise a promise, right??). So, I came up with a short list of ways that I can keep this promise to her over the years and as she grows:

  1. Travel: I guess this is an obvious choice for us. I believe there is so much experience that can be gained from seeing new places and visiting new cultures.

2. Read to her: I have always believed that books are so powerful in that they promote curiosity and further questions. I’ve made reading a part of our morning and evening ritual.

3. Instill within her a sense of faith: Life won’t always go her way, having faith will give her the hope to push through.

4. Teach her that it’s ok to be alone: No, not alone all day, everyday… but to cultivate a sense of being able to find peace in solitude… in reading a book, in writing a story, in going for a run. Essentially, being able to find passion within herself as opposed to looking for it externally and from others.

The photos below were taken during times I was fulfilling my promise to her… during a family run and a day with the family seeing the Easter bunny. I plan to keep these photos as a small, daily, reminder of my #motherspromise.

Since bringing little miss Harper home from the hospital, we have been using Pampers Premium Care {available at Walmart and Walmart.com}. I’ve been so happy with this line
due to its 5 star skin care rating.
They’re hypoallergenic (something so important to me because allergies run in the family…) and contain a wetness indicator (essentially removing the guess work as to if she needs to be changed or not), unique absorb away liner,
breathable inside and out, along with extra absorb channels. Could it get any better?!
