Switzerland Highlights

IMG_2116

We spent the middle part of our European adventure in Switzerland, more specifically Lucerne (3 nights) and Zurich (1 night). This was a country that I had been wanting to visit for years. I can’t necessarily pinpoint why, but when we stepped out onto our balcony that first day, I knew immediately why. The beauty was breathtaking… so much so that there are literally no words to describe how pristine and quaint the town of Lucerne truly is. The best way I know how to describe it is by telling people, “It’s like Fantasyland at Disneyland…” We ate delicious food and the people were kind. The pace of life is slower than that of the other two countries we visited, so it was the perfect mid-point on our journey. Both Lucerne and Zurich are German speaking parts of Switzerland, so if you’re planning a visit I would recommend picking up a few phrases here and there… we didn’t (because we thought it was French) and were two deers caught in headlights 🙂 Below you can find our recommendations.

Hotel Montana: We stayed here for our stay in Lucerne. I can’t recommend it more. If you pick a lake facing room, your views will be utterly spectacular. They have a wonderful lounge that livens up on the evening with fun cocktails and a jazz band. Their breakfast is phenomenal (best in the city… so we were told…).

B2 Boutique Hotel: Zurich was a stop over and we couldn’t have been happier with this spot. We actually used this day to recharge and refresh for the remainder of the trip. The hotel is known for its thermal pools (especially the one on the rooftop). We treated ourselves to a day spent at the spa 🙂

Lucerne Eats:

Bam Bou: Check this spot out for a great Asian cuisine.

Hotel Rebstock: This is a great restaurant for everything traditional Swiss… food, ambiance, and decor… and if you choose to sit outside… the view isn’t shabby either (it’s of the Alps!).

Bauchman: This spot is everywhere. A great quick-stop for yummy sandwiches and pastries (soft pretzel anyone??). We also picked up gourmet sandwiches and took them on a picnic to Mt. Pilatus.

Rathaus Brauerei: A quintessential brewery… try their brauts and beer

See Bistro Luz: We had veal brauts here (twice) and enjoyed views of the lake.

To Do:

Farmer’s Market: There is a cute little farmer’s market every Sunday. Definitely worth checking out.

Lake Cruise: Hop on one of the boats that can take you on a cruise/tour of Lake Lucerne. Definitely worth it!

Mt. Piltaus: YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS!! See below for the photos, but it is a half day experience with astounding beauty. We chose to pack a picnic and have lunch at the halfway point.
