I only have one photo from this past weekend. It’s the photo above as we headed off to enjoy some pool time at my parent’s house all weekend long. And while we all enjoyed our time as a family, the racist incidents over the past week were in the forefront of my mind. From George Floyd to Christian Cooper (and I know there are countless more that occur daily) it made me pause and self reflect. I understand that I will never understand what it is like to be the victim of racism, but I do know that I will work within my home, and community, to create aware girls, who are taught to love everyone (red, brown, yellow, black, and white). I will educate myself further on white privilege + racial injustice so that I can have those conversations with my girls as well.
And while I know that the topic of race often stirs up uncomfortable feelings within people, I often find that the most growth and change within myself occurs when I’m willing to sit with discomfort and learn from it.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Nelson Mandela
