I started reading “The Hotel Nantucket” last week, and I’m almost finished with it. As I was reading last night I came across these two sentences that seemed to capture what I’m feeling as we head into the week ahead:

“When deep August arrives, a certain melancholy sets in, the kind people get on a Sunday afternoon. The summer, which seemed so endless back in June, will be over in a few shorts weeks.”

And while the season of summer technically isn’t over until the end of September, the “summer” as we know if officially ends tomorrow when the girls start school. It’s hard to believe that we are here already. When school ended back in May, and we took our long awaited trip to Hawaii, it seemed as if we had an entire summer ahead of us… and now, we just closed out the last weekend of the official summer season, and it’s time for back to school… rushed mornings, early bedtimes, a more rigid routine….

And so knowing what was ahead of us, when we returned home from Europe, I tried to soak in all those “lasts” of the summer with the girls… last beach day, last Shake Shack breakfast run (no, not shakes for breakfast, haha), the last backyard water day, etc… and I’d say it was a success, but we’re still not ready to say goodbye…

So, we will continue to live the summer season on the weekends, and live the back to school life during the weeks… because we’re just not quite ready to fade into fall yet.
