Having spent the last few days flying solo in parent mode, one thing became glaringly obvious. Having pieces that I can easily mix + match together, in the neutral color scheme, made getting ready so much easier. Knowing that any shirt or pant combo could easily mix together, made it incredibly easy to get dressed while juggling two kiddos….
I’ve always loved the idea of a capsule wardrobe, and feel that it lends itself to minimalistic outfits that look refined + pulled together. Being able to combine only a few pieces in your closet to create various different looks is a sure way to ensure bang for your buck when you’re looking to buy clothes. So when I was at online shopping at Nordstrom (going to the mall is a thing of the past for a few months…) I decided that I’d try my hand at creating a simple summer capsule wardrobe that can easily be taken anywhere our travels take us this summer…. and pair with pieces I already own. And since Nordstrom’s selection for summer is perfectly on trend, I knew I’d find amazing basic tanks, bottoms, and accessories that could take me through the season.
You can see all me selections above + styled various ways below. With just the items above you can get about 11 outfits… and then if you consider pieces that you already own, that number increases. Breaking down why I love these selects below….
Madewell Whisper Cotton Tank: I basically already own this tank in 3 colors (white, grey, and black…) and it’s a staple every summer season. Such a lightweight piece that can easy be fully tucked, front tucked, knotted, or worn untucked with just about any bottom. The v-neck is flattering on everyone, and it comes in at a great price point.
White Jeans: I actually bought these when I was pregnant (sized up 2 + wore a bellaband), but the stretch is so good, the high waist flattering, and a white jean is a must for summer.
Paperbag Denim Shorts: When I first saw these I knew I’d wear them all summer. First of all, elastic waistbands are a postpartum dream… but secondly, they’re such a great alternative to cut-offs. You can wear them as a cover-up with your favorite suit too.
Blush Paperbag Shorts: My reasons are similar to the above mentioned shorts, but the color is great… and will look even better when I’m actually tan. Just bought this self tanner to speed along the process…
White Bodysuit: So this was actually a favorite from last season, but effortlessly fits with so many of the items featured today. It fits like a dream (I’m wearing a belly band with it right now….) and I know I’ll wear it just as much as I did last summer season.
Open Knit Sweater: My love of open knits is something I talk about frequently, so when I stumbled across this one I knew it would be perfect for cool summer nights spent around the fire-pit or at the beach for an evening picnic. I sized up for a slightly slouchy fit.
Blush Drawstring Pants: Easily worn for everyday life, or as a summer coverup, they’re comfortable and made of a breezy summer fabric. I love that they can easily be worn casually or slightly dressier for a casual summer date night.
Dress: Perfect for a casual brunch, backyard get together with friends, or even dressed up for a date night. Super flattering fit with a classic cut. I’m wearing a belly band with it…
And then I easily mix all the pieces with my favorite gold accessories + straw hat….
There you have it… 11 ways to make neutral outfits for summer!
