With the summer season somehow upon us already (let’s face it, all of spring was spent within the confines of our own plot lines) I’m looking forward to so many simple things: outdoor dining, long afternoons spent at my parent’s pool, smelling like sunscreen all day long (it’s the little things), rose season, wide brimmed hats on regular rotation, and small little adventures with our family (as we see fit).
Something I’ve been anticipating this entire “safer at home” season is to have family (and friends, eventually) over again to entertain in our backyard. If there is one thing (okay, there are a lot of things, but…) I got from my mom, it’s my love of entertaining with simple dishes, beautiful tables-capes, and a warm atmosphere. I remember long summer days spent in my parent’s backyard having family friends over for easy barbecues… filling their space with lots of laughter and warmth. It’s something that I want for our backyard this season….
And when it comes to beautiful tables-capes to set the mood, MacKenzie-Childs has so many different options for whatever atmosphere you’re trying to create. Whether it’s an easy picnic with the family using their outdoor enamel collection (I have this Courtly Check Enamel Wine Cooler + Courtly Check Olivewood Salad Serving Set and love them) or a more celebratory occasion using their porcelain items, it’s sure to look beautiful. I recently got several pieces from the SoHo collection and they’re gorgeous (especially the gold rim). I appreciate versatile tableware (just like my clothing) and this collection can easily be used for a casual get together, or a more formal gathering, all based on the table accessories you use. I chose to style them for an al fresco backyard dinner with casual raffia chargers and a simple sprig of rosemary on the plate. I used this beautiful SoHo Serving Bowl in Midnight (that is pebbled black with a gold rim) to make a leafy green salad, but it could also work for a fruit or pasta salad as well… and the SoHo Serving Platter in cloud is great for ribs, grilled chicken, or even our favorite summertime dessert, which I’m including the simple directions below…
ICE CREAM SANDWICHES
We’ve been having these super easy, delicious, post dinner treats for years. You can make them as gourmet, or as simple, as you want. You can use store bought cookies, or make your own…. Dairy free ice cream, or the real deal. You can add sprinkles in the middle, chocolate chips, or graham cracker crumbles…
And, if you’re really in a pinch, use some graham crackers you have in your pantry (if you’re a mom, you likely have them). They’re just as delicious!
If you’re wanting to get even fancier, you can make an ice cream sandwich bar complete with cookie choices, ice cream options, and toppings. Fully customizable and every age loves them.
So, here’s to a summer filled with simple backyard entertaining friends!
