Sister Day at Javier’s

If you’re lucky enough to have a sister, you know how special that bond can be. Not to get all mushy, but Shannon and my relationship is one of the relationships I cherish most. Therefore, when we get a “sister” day, we go all out-whether that’s on a challenging hike, a long run, shopping, or, as was the case last weekend, a lunch and stroll by the beach in Newport Coast/Corona Del Mar. We had originally intended to travel to LA to try a new restaurant, but when we saw how perfect the weather was, decided it would be a crime not to spend it by the beach. Our destination was a quick, easy decision-Javier’s Cantina in Crystal Cove. We’ve been here several times for various occasions, but this place never gets old! Whether you’re in the mood for some mouthwatering margaritas, tasty tacos, or excellent entrees, Javier’s is the quintessential gourmet Mexican food.

The decor exudes a classy, yet fun atmosphere, that welcomes a diverse crowd. We chose to sit outside since it was so pleasant (first picture), but the lower picture is perfect for evenings, bigger parties, and special occasions.

IMG_3271 IMG_3268The first picture is my order: one chicken and one steak taco-absolutely delicious! Served with flour or corn tortillas smothered in guacamole (an unfortunately overlooked fact on my part-I’m allergic to avocado). The tacos are just the right size, and are even better with the rice and beans on the side mixed inside the tacos.

The second picture is Shannon’s order-the Pollo Asado-served with a side of beans, guacamole, and a poblano chile stuffed with cotija cheese….YUM. The poblano chile with cotija cheese was one of the best parts of the meal! (if I do say so myself…especially given it wasn’t even my meal).

Pair these delectable meals with a wonderfully refreshing Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc and some great company, and you have a recipe for an ideal Saturday afternoon! Note: if you’re planning on heading to Javier’s for dinner, I strongly recommend you make reservations! It gets packed and the wait can get pretty hefty-just another sign it’s a great place!

Our day ended with a lovely stroll along Corona Del Mar, just a few miles north of Javier’s on Pacific Coast Highway. The sun was shining, the ocean was shimmering, and we were glowing!

If you can find a way to cherish the relationships most important to you-do it! And if you can do it fashionably, even better!
