When I was growing up my mom always told me not to “be silly” when I was around boys (she was referring to school dances, birthday parties… when they turned co-ed, etc). She in no way was telling me not to have fun, but rather to use my mind. To be strong willed and well spoken, rather than silly and mindless. It was something that always resonated with me, and something that probably didn’t always make me Mrs. Popular with the boys at times… I can vividly recall a few situations, but I’ll save that for another post.

So, this past Friday when I was buying these beautiful pink roses (as I do every Friday…) and a man turned to me, pointed at my stomach, and said, “Shouldn’t he be buying those for you?” (in direct reference to my husband) I simply looked at him, straight faced, and said, “I don’t need a man to buy me flowers. Thank you.” Then I smiled politely. I’m not a self proclaimed feminist, but it all ties back to the fact that I believe, as a woman, I am self sufficient… and the quote above (and my mom’s wise words) are the qualities I hope to model for my daughter when she arrives.

Here’s to buying yourself flowers, thinking for yourself, and using that attitude to your advantage… all while being classy! (Maybe it’s a little #womanpower)
