If there is one thing I’ve really challenged myself to be this year, it’s more creative (obviously, this is a more lighthearted area of growth). With activities limited, more time spent at home, and the holiday season rapidly approaching I wanted to make sure that the 2020 holiday season was still one filled with memories, good times, and laughter. So a few weeks ago I got to thinking about how we could make Halloween 2020 the best yet… and below I’m sharing a few of the fun ideas we’ve come up with!
COSTUMES
To make things a little more special for Harper, we’re making our theme a full blown family concept… with not only our immediate family dressing up, but also my mom, dad, sister, and brother-in-law. When we told Harper this, the sheer look of excitement on her face was something I will never forget…
We decided to all go as a character from The Wizard Of Oz. Harper recently watched the movie and became enamored with it. And, with so many different character options, there were just enough choices for everyone. Harper will be Glenda, Camille will be Dorthy, TJ the Tin Man, I will be the Scarecrow… and then we a wicked witch, OZ, and Lion. As far as Glenda’s costume goes, we’ll be lucky if it makes it to actual Halloween… Harper never takes it off…
If dressing up isn’t your thing, then these adorable matching Halloween pajamas I got the girls are super fun for this season!
DECORATING
In full disclosure, I’ve never done a ton of Halloween decorations. Yet, there was just something about 2020 that compelled me to embrace it fully. To create some festivity within the home, and I couldn’t be happier that I did. Harper was so engaged in the process and absolutely loved decorating the house + porch.
For our front yard, we out out this giant spider web (I saw another neighbor with it last year and thought it was so cute), bats around the door, pumpkins on the porch, and some yellow(ish) mums in a pot. After Halloween I’ll remove the bats and just leave the pumpkins + mums (and this wreath, although it hasn’t arrived yet)…..
Inside, I mainly focused on the fireplace mantle with orange lights (really festive), spider web, and crows. As a centerpiece on our dining table, I clustered white + blush pink pumpkins (real) with a skill (we have a few of these around), along with these gold candle holders + black tapered candles.
ACTIVITIES
This is where I’m most excited. We decided that a few weeks ago we would have a family Halloween party….
I found some really fun little games at Target, like this pin the skeleton game, ring toss game, spiderweb splat game, and then we will also do bopping for apples.
As far as trick-or-treating goes, someone told me their idea and I’m running with it! Each family member will be in a room in our house and the girls will go to each bedroom door and get their candy… my family members are pretty creative so I’m sure they’ll get the girls excited to do multiple rounds. And while I know it isn’t the same as years past, it’s all in how we present it to Harper… the more excited we are about it, the more excited she gets too!
I’ll also make a batch of this vegetarian chili for everyone to enjoy!
