In the therapy world, black and white is never desirable. We call it “black and white thinking…” aka “all or none thinking.” You know, those thoughts that everything is either all good or all bad. The perfect day or the worst day ever. You either did perfectly or utterly failed. That person who just grates you is either completely appalling or perfectly pleasing. You get the drift. It’s not good. The solution? Finding the gray. Grey is soft. It’s neutral and peaceful. Those are the good thoughts… better thoughts.
Thankfully, when getting dressed in the morning, I’m not immediately diagnosable based on my clothing decisions. Black and white is most often my “go-to” for those “I have nothing to wear days.” Did you catch that? Nothing to wear?? Black and white thinking right there…. so essentially, my outfit choice here is my gray antidote to all or none thinking.
