As I mentioned last week, we headed to Big Sky, Montana to celebrate TJ’s birthday this past weekend and wow. The amount of natural beauty that surrounded us was unmatched. It was our first time in Big Sky, so we didn’t know exactly what to expect, but it was truly such an epic experience. We jammed as much as we could into the three full days that we had, and I’m sharing a breakdown of what we did each day below:
LODGING: We stayed in Big Sky, MT- at The Montage. Since we went during their in between summer and winter season, a lot of the amenities were closed, which was a con. Despite, the rooms and ground were beautiful. Yet, if we were to return, we would likely stay at Lone Mountain Ranch, since it has more of a mountain/ranch feel to it… a bit more of what we were looking for (and we did eat there 2 nights and it was absolutely delicious).
DAY 1: Hike Ousel Falls 🥾- very family friendly, about 1.7 miles there and back. Views are stunning and the waterfall at the end is so beautiful.
DAY 2: Half Day Tour of Yellowstone ⛰️: this was a 6 hour wildlife and landmark tour of the park. We spotted Elk, Bison, Deer, and various birds and saw Old Faithful erupt, as well as the Grand Prismatic (lots of steam for us that morning so we weren’t able to see the turquoise water, but it was still amazing nonetheless). The hotel organized this tour for us. We had an option to choose either a full safari tour OR a monuments tour and we chose the latter since there was no guarantee we would see wildlife (and we figured we would see at least some on the way). If you do a full day tour, you would get both.
DAY 3: Fly Fishing 🎣 🐟 : another fun family activity. We had a 2 hour experience with an instructor who was patient and taught us all how to catch and release fly fish. We did this through Gallatin River Guides and our girls absolutely loved it… and so did the adults. We caught and released about 12 fish in total.
Eat: don’t miss dinner at Lone Mountain Ranch (and make a reservation well in advance)… we went twice and both times the experience was wonderful. Family friendly environment, and you can feed the horses after. We also enjoyed breakfast and dinner at Cortina (at Montage Big Sky).
Since we went in the “shoulder season” between summer and winter a lot of restaurants were closed, so we stuck to the hotels for the majority of our more notable meals.
We wanted to horseback ride, but couldn’t find a place to accommodate our littlest at 5.5 years old (most places said 7 was their minimum)… but that’s something we definitely would have done had the entire family been able to partake.
And that’s it! Sharing photos below, and I’ve broken it down into outfits and then days/nights. I hope it helps if you’re considering a trip to the area!
