Yesterday, right before it was time to head inside to start our pizza dinner, we were playing in the front yard with the girls. My parents had stopped by to drop off Valentine’s for the girls, and we were watching the girls color rocks (yes, this was intentional… trying to get creative over here….). As I was standing with my back to the street, I heard someone call my name. When I turned around I saw that it was a family we had started chatting with, and our girls had started to play together, right before COVID started (in fact the last time we had the girls play together was the week before CA shut down). They live a few blocks down from us, and were riding their bikes around the neighborhood. We caught up for about 15 minutes, and when it was time for us to head inside their little daughter said “But I’m not ready to leave yet…”

It struck us all. The girls weren’t even playing together, just talking from a distance… and it reminded me of what I can’t wait for once we can resume life again. Human interaction. Human connection… beyond the driveway, beyond the phone, beyond the computer screen… going to friend’s houses, having our kiddos play together, hugging friends, and not saying to people, “When this is all over….” but actually making plans and putting something on the calendar.

I am grateful that this past year has taught me to never take those things for granted again.
