TJ + I used to be very diligent about our date nights out…. basically once a week before we had kiddos. Then Harper entered the picture (and now Camille) and it became a bit more challenging getting out, weekly, for our dates. That’s when we really started to get creative. We both knew the value of the 1:1 time together, so we weren’t willing to compromise that just because we couldn’t physically leave the house. So over the years we got creative + have come to rely on several different “at home” date night options that we can rotate between…
Some of our favorite go-to, at home, date night ideas include:
Grabbing a bottle of wine, turning on our favorite music station (currently John Mayer + Cold Play), + just catching up on the past week…
Picking a cuisine + having that be the theme for the evening… everything from food, cocktails, + music. One of our favorites in Pinot + Pizza…
Picking a documentary series to watch together. We both find that documentaries spark conversation much more than a TV show or regular movie. One of our recent favorites was the Aaron Hernandez documentary…..
Game Night- whatever will get you laughing together… cards, board games, heads up…
Challenges- these are all over the internet right now if you type in “couple’s challenges.” TJ is great at coming up with random ones on his own. A couple weeks ago it was the knee jump challenge (took me several failed attempts before I was successful….) but it sure got us laughing together. Another one I saw was have the husband do the wife’s makeup. I could only imagine the laughs that would induce…..
And, if you like vino as much as we do, have an at home wine tasting night when the kiddos go down. Get some items for a charcuterie board and you can each pick out a bottle of two of wine and then do a blind tasting. It’s super fun!
And one requirement we always have is comfort. Always. And for that we turn to Jockey + their wide selection of loungewear for both men + women. I recently picked up these comfy joggers + added a third color of my go-to lounging bralette to my collection (I bought my first one a year ago and it’s so comfortable)… both are such easy options for lounging around the house together (I also just saw this henley button style tie dye bralette in grey + thinking it would be so comfortable as well). Jockey also has a line of TrueFit promise pieces that are made of super soft + silky material that doesn’t gap or leave you spilling over (know what I mean??). I have this pair of underwear in two colors and they’re seriously so comfortable. And, TJ pretty much wears these pants for everything (workouts, lounging, etc…) + when paired with this grey waffle crew it’s great for those challenges he loves to create….
In the end, I learned how valuable it was to invest in your marriage in those very early years of my therapeutic training. The average couple waits 6 years to seek help for their marital issues, and at that point the work is challenging. No marriage is without challenges, nor is any marriage perfect, but TJ + I know that we tend to fire on all cylinders when we’ve taken time to invest in us (and, to be honest, can tell when we haven’t). So, here’s to date nights at home that are equally as fun, and slightly more comfortable!
