Wellness Wednesday || My Switch To Natural Deodorant

A few years ago I was having a coffee with a friend (or maybe it was happy hour…) and she mentioned to me that she had recently switched to a natural deodorant. When I inquired more, only thinking about how I’d be the “stinky” one at the gym if I did so, she mentioned that she had recently read about concerns of aluminum (the acting ingredient in antiperspirants to prevent sweating by plugging up your sweat ducts to prevent wetness…..) in antiperspirants, and wanted to make the switch. She was trying to conceive and wanted to make sure the toxins found in many beauty products didn’t impact her hormonal balance (some research has shown that toxins in beauty products can impact reproductive hormones, specifically parabens, phthalates, benzoyl peroxide, triclosan, resorcinol, hydroquinone, petroleum, MIT, and Oxybenzone, and artificial dyes + colors….). It all sounded good to me, but as we got to chatting about other topics, I forgot. Until about a year ago when we started to talk about expanding our family, and the importance of hormonal balance began paramount. I began to switch out many of my regular beauty products for more “natural” ones, and left deodorant last on the list (still worried about smelling). When I decided it was time, I didn’t know where to start. There were so many mixed reviews on different brands. I had success with some and then eventually that success would be less consistent and I’d be back to square one. Then I discovered Native Deodorant and have been hooked since.

Their products are made in the United States, paraben, sulfate, aluminum free, and only tested on humans. And while knowing what isn’t in your beauty products is important, it’s equally as important to know what is in them. Native Deodorant contains shea butter, jojoba oil, beeswax, baking soda, vitamin E, vegetable preservatives, acidophilus (natural bacteria found in your intestine), arrowroot powder, fractionated coconut oil, stearyl alcohol, castor bean oil, probiotics, coconut oil, and maltodextrin. They use baking soda to neutralize odor, and arrowroot powder to absorb moisture and acidophilus, a naturally occurring probiotic found in your intestines. All sounds good and natural to me… but does it pass the sweat test?

I purchased myself the seasonal trio (the scents are subtle and smell so good) to try. Annnd, because I’m just one person I decided to get TJ the men’s grapefruit + sandalwood scent… as well as my sister, who has very sensitive skin and is a fourth grade teacher running after kiddos all day, the sensitive deodorant in lilac + white tea. The verdict after several weeks was that it held up + passed the test. For me, I wore it during our trip to Hawaii, during all my morning runs/cardio sessions, and during our active days…. TJ the same… plus a rigorous day shoveling and raking our backyard… and we both concluded we were smelly and pretty sweat free. My sister mentioned the same experience and that it didn’t irritate her skin. With that success I decided to purchase the bar soap (the coconut vanilla scent is amazing) for daily use.

Every time I find a clean + natural beauty product that works as well as my previous (likely toxin filled) one, it makes me so happy. I pay so much attention to taking care of my body through fitness, mental health, and what I eat that watching what I use on it is an equally important step… especially now that I’m sharing my body with a growing little lady.
