Meet my mom. Over the years she has meant so many different things to me and our relationship has evolved and changed. She’s been my parent, my friend, a confidant, and a model in so many ways. Growing up, she was always someone I looked to for style guidance. I would rummage through her closet to “borrow” her vintage bags (and I use the term borrow loosely, as they would always end up hidden in my closet until she went looking for them… oops) and try on various articles of clothing. I can vividly recall watching her getting ready for a date night with my dad, and she wore the prettiest burgundy dress. I begged her to promise me that I could wear it to my high school prom. She agreed, letting me know that if I changed my mind in 10 years, she wouldn’t be offended (yes, I was 8 and already thinking about what I wanted to wear to my prom… forget the date!).
While she provided me with style inspiration over the years, she was always quick to remind me that what’s on the outside doesn’t count as much as what is on the inside. Her favorite statement was “The clothes don’t make the woman, the woman makes the clothes.” She taught me that “clothes” are only a small facet of style… the smile a woman wears, the depth of character she possess… that’s what truly defines a woman’s style and beauty. When it came time to finding options for our Mother’s Day festivities, New York & Co seemed like an easy choice. Given mom’s motto that the woman makes the outfit, I’ve never felt a need to layer on too many pieces at a time…. so this dress was the perfect way to have a little fun with my outfit, yet keep things relatively simple. Their dresses fit both of our tastes… mine, a little more youthful, and mom’s desire for something a little more modest… in the shoes department too! It’s a win win for the both of us.
