Wellness Wednesday || The 4 Things I Do In The Morning To Set The Tone For A Healthy Day

This post is sponsored by Organic Stevia In The Raw® and SheKnows Media. All opinions expressed are my own.

I’ve always been more of a morning person than a night owl. I’ve never pulled an all-nighter (I tried, multiple times… could never keep my eyes open…), and working out in the evening has always felt more on the sluggish than invigorating side. I guess it all started in high school, when I would go out for a morning run to get ready for the day ahead…. I didn’t do it every morning, but on the days I did, there was a noticeable difference. I took a break in college (hmmm… I wonder why…), but when I graduated and went to grad school, I put together a morning routine that set the tone for a healthy day, both physically and mentally. It’s something I’ve followed ever since, making slight modifications when little miss arrived. Yet, at the core, there are 4 things I do, daily, that set me up for a balanced day….

  1. Wake-up + Workout: For me, this is like a morning cup of coffee…. without it, I’m void of energy for the day. It doesn’t always have to be an intense workout, even a few walking laps around the neighborhood gets me moving and feeling awake. During this time, I set my priorities for the day, work through any thoughts I may be having, and get my endorphin release. Of course, when little miss arrived, I needed to wake up even earlier to squeeze this in…. which I did by waking up 10 minutes earlier, every other day, for about a week. At the end of the week, my body had adapted to the new time.

2. Eat A Healthy Breakfast: One of my favorite meals of the day, always. I’m typically pretty hungry after my workout, so skipping this meal is never an option. I try to make sure that both Harper and I are getting a filling, and nutritious, morning start. Anything from eggs and fruit, to a bowl of oatmeal, yogurt and granola, or a homemade gluten free/dairy free waffle, I like to make sure it’s tasty. Something I’ve started using, to add a little sweetness, is Organic Stevia In The Raw®. I discovered Organic Stevia In The Raw  when I was looking to do a little baking this fall (bring on all things pumpkin please. It’s organic, non-gmo (very important), vegan, and naturally gluten free. It comes in tiny packets (seen above), which means I can easily toss them in my purse to sprinkle in my morning iced tea (took a few of them to Hawaii to use them with my morning iced green teas). One of our favorite ways to use it is dusted on our morning oatmeal with berries. It adds a delicious, sweet taste. I’ve always felt that a healthy breakfast sets me up to make better choices throughout the day! You can find Organic Stevia In The Raw at Walmart or purchase it online here.

3. Make My Bed:  Having a “healthy” day goes way beyond just working out and making the right food choices. It also has a lot to do with making decisions that I know will set me up for a positive day mentally. Making my bed is one I’ve been doing for years. It’s a very little thing that takes about five minutes, but helps me feel much more organized… and for me, personally, an organized life makes me less anxious. Less anxiety means I can be more present in my relationships, which is the ultimate goal.

4. Gratitude: Another contributor to the mental health of a day. So much research has shown that having a position of gratitude improves our health, relationships, emotions, personality, and career. I don’t spend a long time on it, about 2-5 minutes while I eat my breakfast. I simply jot down a few things I feel particularly grateful for that day. I find that simply reminding myself of the things I have to be grateful for sets that stage to be able to manage smaller setbacks throughout my day.

That’s it. Nothing major, or particularly time consuming, but it’s usually a few small things that add up to a big difference. I’d love to know what you do to set a positive tone for your day!

I do a daily devotional to set the tone for the day as well as a healthy breakfast and making my bed

  2. Aubrey says:

My morning routine has a lot of the same elements as yours-workout before baby wakes up, eat a good breakfast and make get my husband’s breakfast/lunch together for the day, make my bed-my Mom would be so proud haha. I am pregnant with #2 (5 weeks left😊)so I’ve had to make some changes to my morning routine to include working on my lesson plans for while I’m out on maternity leave.
I have found that my niggt routine helps me feel prepared for the day too, making my to do list, reviewing he next days lessons, cleaning in around the house-all helps me to feel like I have a plan for the next day.

  3. Sharon says:

Loving on and being loved on by my fur babies get my day started off on the right foot every day. That, and my 2 cups of coffee.

  5. Suzanne G says:

I have a cup of tea when I first get up and I then meditate for 20 minutes. I have a smoothie for breakfast and then my day begins.

  6. Oh I was going to comment anyway, but thanks for the giveaway too!
I have to make my bed in the morning. I feel exactly the same way on days I don’t. Even if I’m running behind, I know that if i take the 3 minutes to make my bed I will mentally feel better for the day. I am going to try your wake up 10 minutes earlier every other day trick because I miss working out in the morning. I’m having a tough time adjusting to that now that I’m a mom of two. Do you have any tips on how to still get up even when the baby isn’t cooperating with sleeping through the night? Or do you think I should just hold off on that goal until she is a year old. #teethingstinks

Coffee! Coffee! Get myself ready – help kids get ready. Breathe. Let dog out. Breathe. Try to set a calm tone for kids and me before rushing out the door. Hug kids as tightly as possible and tell them I love them 100x before they leave for school. Breathe.

  8. Melissa says:

Love this! I’d love to hear more about your go-tos for dairy free meals throughout the day. My son has a dairy and red meat allergy and I’ve found it so difficult to find things to feed him. Most likely because I myself am not use to eating this way.

  9. alicia says:

I too love my morning workouts! Coffee is always a must, but on the weekends, I love to make it extra special for the hubs/myself…we do “fancy lattes”!

  10. Christina says:

If I am working I wake up alittle earlier to take a long hot shower . It helps me wake up slowly and feel less anxious . If I am off I do yoga when I first wake up then me and my son have breakfast together and watch Ryan and Kelly while I drink coffee lol

  11. mami2jcn says:

I get up before everyone else and have a yogurt while I check my emails.

  18. Sandra M. says:

My morning ritual includes writing in my gratitude journal, reading a page out of my Women’s Daily Devotional book, seeing what I have written down in my planner for the day, working out, coffee then breakfast.

  19. Julie Wood says:

Stevia in the Raw is the only sugar I use! My morning ritual is to get the kids up, make a healthy breakfast, make coffee and sit and have a nice time with the kids!

  20. Laura Kobliska says:

It is tough to keep a morning ritual when I have to leave at 6:30am. I wish I could set my alarm earlier to avoid a hectic morning, but I can’t seem to forego that extra 10 mins of shut eye. With that being said, my husband and I always try to read Jesus Calling when we wake up. It helps us establish a good and intentional mindset for the day. After we get ready, we always make smoothies to go with fresh fruit, spinach, almond milk, yogurt, collagen peptides and flax. Like you said, fueling yourself in the am sets you up for energy through out the day!

  22. Natalie says:

I also workout after I wake up first thing in the morning. Then I get ready for work, pack my lunch and eat my breakfast at work.

I like to snuggle with my fur babies, drink a nice cup of tea and watch some news each morning.

  28. Sivan says:

For me, it’s also all about the workout. Whether it’s a strength workout in the garage or running outside, getting my heart pumping is so helpful in helping me wake up. I can feel exhausted prior and think there’s no way I can get it done, and somehow my energy goes up.

  29. It’s going to sound odd but having a clean kitchen in the morning makes it not so overwhelming when I come home. We have a tendency to leave stuff out which is a terrible habit like dirty dishes and getting it to it later when we’re too tored

  30. Niloo says:

One of my morning routines is getting outside to take some deep breaths. I wake up and workout at the gym every morning and go straight to an office from there. I’ve made it a point to sit outside after my shower and enjoy my coffee and just take a few deep full breaths to appreciate what I Have around me and to never take it for granted. 🙂

  31. My healthy morning rituals are very similar to yours
Wake up about 4:30, ACV diluted wam water, then coffee with a splash of cashew milk in my bed for about 15 min while I scroll through a few emails, news or social media. I work out from about 5:15 to 6. In the shower by 6, kisses for the kids at 6:30 am. Out the door with my healthy breakfast ( homemade muffin, waffles or mason yogurt bowls)by 6:45 when sitter arrives and then a quick pop in to grab my pre-ordered coffee from Starbucks for my commute to teach jr/sr high school! Clocked in and settled at my desk by 7:45;)

  32. I have a cup of tea when I first get up and I do some yoga.

  33. Coffee, news, gratitude, healthy breakfast & time with my baby before work

  34. Courtney vincen says:

Hi! I was going to comment anyway so the giveaway is an added perk!
I set my intentions for the day as well as make my bed. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so I always make my son and myself a balanced healthy breakfast.

My morning rituals include yoga and black coffee.
