My Guide To Fall Layering + Favorite Outwear

img_0350

When I think about layering for the colder temps, a very vivid, and cringe worthy, image comes to mind. Me, as my younger self, bundled up in so many layers, looking like a bloated snowman, topped with a hot pink puffer jacket. Cute then, not okay now. All that being said, as the temps start to drop, and we welcome a few rainstorms here and there, it’s time to pull out my favorite layering pieces. The temperatures aren’t yet cold enough to bundle up all day, so layering is essential. Yet, if I’m wanting to stay away from the said, not so pretty image, I try to evoke a few rules… and Nordstrom has some of the best pieces, at an excellent price point, for layering this fall season. So, if you too want to avoid looking like my five year old self, I have you covered with my top tips!

1. A Lightweight, Yet Comfortable, Basic Top: I guess this is key to being able to move freely…. too thick of a layer and you’ll be stiff… too lightweight and you’ll be too chilly. Over the past month or so, I’ve found some perfect layering tops. The one I’m wearing today is incredibly soft (as in, I could sleep in it) and was the perfect option to keep me warm on this rainy afternoon. I also own this thermal long sleeve top… it’s incredibly soft, and I’ve worn it so many times under various pieces.  It also has the cutest thumb holes to keep the arms down. I also like this henley peplum option… it adds a cute feminine layer to any outfit.

2. A Chic Piece of Outerwear: For my top layer, I try to be sure that it is roomy enough to comfortably allow me to move around. Sometimes I size up to ensure the perfect fit. There are so many great options this fall for outerwear. I love this faux leather jacket in grey (and would also layer it over a dress for a fancier occasion). I own this motto jacket, which is on the lighter side, but still a great option as the temps level off…. and think this light grey suede jacket is gorgeous. Another favorite layering option of mine is a vest. I think they look so chic over a long sleeve tunic. A few that I am currently loving include this rib knit version, quilted vest (perfect for a casual day), and this long shearling option. A few heavier options, for those cooooold days, include this puffer faux fur hooded coat (I have one almost identical to it and wear it all the time when it rains) and this double breasted boucle coat.

3. Fitted Pants: My rule here is that if the top half is a little on the heavy side, then the bottom needs to be a tad more streamlined. I usually opt for a favorite pair of skinny jeans, or a comfortable pair of leggings.

That’s it… super simple! Here’s to a season full of chic + comfortable layering!
