Packing For A Weekend Getaway With Dooney & Bourke

When I was old enough to identify the brands in my mother’s closet, I came across a classic black pebble leather bag. It was finished with a camel colored leather trim and embossed with a duck logo. I was quickly made aware that it was a Dooney & Bourke bag…. one that accompanied my mom on many of our adventures. As I became interested in investing in a classic bag myself, I turned to the brand several times over the year. So, when it came time to selecting new weekend getaway luggage, it was no surprise that Dooney was at the top of our list.

TJ and I decided that with all the weekend getaways we were going on, it was time to invest in some quality luggage. We opted for a piece that would be big enough to accommodate my ever growing need to “have plenty of options,” and a tote that would allow me to have enough room to pack everything I needed to occupy myself on those longer drives or flights. Once we settled on a red luggage bag and a navy tote bag for this past weekend, it simply came down to me packing the right items.

I started with my favorite basics (I guess that’s always a good place to start) to ensure comfort and the ability to layer (stripe top, pink top, white v-neck, black tank).

I always opt for distressed denim and a few cozy knits. Distressed denim gives off the casual-chic vibe I typically opt for on a relaxing weekend… and who doesn’t love warm knits in neutral colors? (black jeans, denim, v-neck sweater, cardigan)

I can’t remember a time when I haven’t brought my own slippers to a hotel… there is just something about being able to slip into the comforts of home while away (slippers, pajamas)

This bag has enough components on the inside for all your personal feminine items… and a zipper to ensure they don’t fall out.

Since working out is part of how TJ and I unwind, fitness gear will always make its way into the suitcase. I opt for a cross-training shoe, since I never know if I’ll be going on a hike, lifting weights in the gym, or embarking on a running tour of a new place. (sports bra c/o Vimmia)

Accessories are where I build on the basics from earlier. A good fedora (black, grey) and a couple of scarves (red, faux fur stole) are all I really need to transition outfits from day to night.

Neutral shoes allow me to get away with not packing on the pounds in the bag… and if you remember my European debacle of brining 10 pairs a couple of years ago, you’ll see that 3 is a drastic improvement! (flats, pumps, boots)

Simple and gold accessories are always my go-to. They go with everything and can make any outfit look dressed up, instantly. (large gold cuff, silver bangle)

A tote with multiple compartments, enough room to fit a computer, a few magazines and books, a camera (and a few lenses), some snacks, and still has room to spare receives an A+ in my book. Oh, and it fits perfectly on the shoulder… something I’ve always struggled to find!

When I’m traveling, I always opt for something comfortable… which is often a variation of distressed denim (or leggings) and a comfortable top. Shoes must easily slip on and off… and no heels please. Comfort is key.

Comments

  1. Dooney & Burke was the first “good bag” I purchased on my own. I saved up for one of those navy pebbled leather satchels when I was in college and it is still in perfect condition.
Love the red bag -so perfect!

I love this story! Isn’t it great how we can remember our first big purchase?

  2. I love how much this seems to hold and the red color is beautiful!
